Managing Lake Urmia, Iran for diverse restoration objectives: Moving beyond a uniform target lake level

چکیده
Lake Urmia, Iran. There is widespread interest in restoring drying saline lakes. At Iran’s hypersaline managers have sought a uniform target lake level of 1274.1 m above sea to lower salinity below 263 g L?1 and recover Artemia sufficient densities support flamingos. We suggest that addressing broader range objectives will allow more flexibility for managing the lake. define eight restoration salinity, sustain flamingo populations, separate islands from each other mainland, reduce lakebed dust, maintain commercially valuable ions, improve recreational access resort beaches. use 40 years experimental, field, satellite, model data relate objective level. describe variations through time associated uncertainties meeting objective. show that:1) prevent setting precise level; 2) The current may not sufficiently flamingos; 3) Restoration do converge single tradeoffs are murky; 4) Urmia should focus on multiple ecosystem services track how they met as varies over time; 5) As information about improves, adapt their management strategies meet most attainable objectives.

Urmia Lake (Northwest Iran): a brief review
Lake Urmia (or Ormiyeh) is one of the largest hypersaline lakes in the world and the habitat of a unique bisexual Artemia species (A. urmiana). Despite this, and several other values of the lake, little literature on it has been published. The present paper is an attempt to provide a brief review on various aspects of the lake. Urmia Lake, located in northwestern Iran, is an oligotrophic lake o...
متن کاملUrmia Lake Watershed Restoration in Iran: Short- and Long-Term Perspectives
Urmia Lake (also known as Oroumieh Lake) is a shallow terminal lake located in northwest Iran and one of the largest permanent lakes in the Middle East. Due to its biodiversity it has been designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and a National Park under the 1971 Ramsar Convention. At present, the entire lake’s watershed is threatened due to drought and abrupt decline of the lake’s water le...
متن کاملHydrogeochemistry of seasonal variation of Urmia Salt Lake, Iran
Urmia Lake has been designated as an international park by the United Nations. The lake occupies a 5700 km2 depression in northwestern Iran. Thirteen permanent rivers flow into the lake. Water level in the lake has been decreased 3.5 m in the last decade due to a shortage of precipitation and progressively dry climate. Geologically the lake basin is considered to be a graben of tectonic origin....
متن کاملDrying of Urmia Lake: modeling of level fluctuations
Background: Urmia Lake, the second largest hyper-saline lake of the world, has experienced lack of water and other environmental issues in recent years. Now, there is a danger of the lake drying out, which will affect the region and its inhabitants. This study aimed to present a model which can relate the water level of the lake to effective factors. Methods: Parameters that influence water le...
